IOM Finland sends a message of support to the Helsinki Pride week which starts today.

“Working for equality and against discrimination are at the core of our values”, says Chief of Mission Simo Kohonen.

“IOM is committed to protecting the migrants we serve from any abuses and we recognise that being a member of a minority can increase migrants’ vulnerability in many ways. We also aim to build a safe space for all our members of staff. As an employer, we have a zero-tolerance policy for any abuse or discrimination.”

IOM offers an LGBTI training package for staff members to introduce topics related to working with LGBTI people in humanitarian settings.

The aim is to increase awareness on the related terminology, global issues, the types of discrimination and persecution LGBTI people face, how to successfully communicate with LGBTI people and problematic assumptions staff members may have that can impact the provision of effective assistance.

“We wish everyone a great Pride week and send our message of support to the organisers and participants,” Kohonen continues.

IOM staff members will join the Pride parade in Helsinki this Saturday.
