IOM and Iceland
The IOM Country Office in Finland is in charge of activities and operations in Finland, Sweden and Iceland. In Iceland the activities include Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration, resettlement of refugees, family reunifications and Pre-Departure Orientation training for quota refugees.
Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration
IOM Finland provides Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR) services to migrants who wish to return from Iceland. The project is carried out in cooperation with the Icelandic Directorate of Immigration (IDI).
The AVRR Iceland project started as a pilot in 2016. The aim is to provide a nation-wide possibility of AVRR in Iceland for people in need of return assistance.
While the project provides capacity building for Icelandic counterparts, its main focus in on assisting the returnees. The project assists, among others, asylum seekers, victims of trafficking, unaccompanied migrant children and other migrants considered vulnerable. The assistance provided to the returnees include pre-departure counselling, acquisition of travel documents, assistance in registering children born in Iceland, travel arrangements to the final destination, transit and arrival assistance, escort services (medical or operational) when needed and special arrangement for vulnerable individuals.
In addition, returnees are assisted at the Reykjavik airport upon departure and provided with pre-departure cash payment from IDI. Some beneficiaries also receive reintegration support after their return, which is paid by the IOM office in the country of return.
Resettlement and family reunification
IOM Finland arranges transportation for the refugees selected for resettlement to all other Nordic countries except Norway. In case needed, IOM can make special arrangements, such as organize escorts for the travel and provide clothing assistance. Before departure, IOM carries out a health check to make sure it is safe for the beneficiaries to travel. IOM also takes care of the travel arrangements for people resettling to Iceland under a family reunification scheme.
Resettlement and family reunification are carried out in partnership with the Icelandic Ministry of Welfare.
Globally IOM provides pre-departure cultural orientation training for refugees accepted for resettlement to a third country. When requested by the government of Iceland, IOM Finland also provides pre-departure orientation for refugees who will resettle in Iceland.
